Essential Oils
Essential oils are a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile chemical compounds from plants. Different parts of the tree, plant, fruit will be harvested and possibly dried. Essential oils are generally extracted by distillation, often by using steam and/or cold pressing (done on all citrus oils). Other processes include expression, solvent extraction, absolute oil extraction, resin tapping and wax embedding. Steam Distillation is generally the most practiced.
Essential oils are often used in aromatherapy. Aromatherapy may be useful to induce relaxation. There is not sufficient evidence that essential oils can effectively treat any condition. Improper use of essential oils may cause harm including allergic reactions, inflammation and skin irritation. Children may be particularly susceptible illness if improper use occurs.
Essential Oils are used in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, air fresheners, flavouring food and drink, and for adding scents too incense and many cleaning products.
